Sr. Marie Elizabeth Doherty, OP, formerly known as Agnes Marie Doherty, died Oct. 11 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 96 and in the 73rd year of religious profession as an Adrian Dominican.
Born in Burnside Township to Philip and Mary Magdalen (Stein) Doherty, she graduated from Brown City High School in Brown City, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Siena Heights (College) University in Adrian, and a Master of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
Sr. Doherty spent 52 years ministering in education at St. Mary, Rockwood; St. Mary, New Baltimore; Adrian Catholic High School, Adrian; Our Lady of Sorrows and Thomas Beahan, Farmington; St. Paul, Owosso; and St. Joseph, Port Huron, as well as at schools in Ohio. She was a Parish Visitor at St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1945 to 1947.
She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2001.
Sr. Doherty is survived by a brother, Carl of Brown City; and two sisters, Rosella Ford of Brown City, and Cecelia Lambert of Marlette. She is also survived by two cousins, Srs. Shirley Ruder and Anne Bernadette Stein, both Adrian Dominicans. She was preceded in death by a cousin, Sr. Coronata Stein, OP.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 14 in St. Catherine Chapel, Adrian. Burial was in the congregation’s cemetery in Adrian.
